Seven databases of bio-degradable plastics released! Contains polylactic acid, PBAT, PHA, PGA, BDO, bioethanol, etc

Degradable plastics can be decomposed into carbon dioxide and water in a short time under certain conditions, which is an effective way to deal with “white pollution” and “ocean plastic pollution”.

Degradable plastics can be produced from bio-based raw materials or from petrochemical or coal chemical raw materials. According to the statistics of ASIACHEM, by the end of 2021, the total planned production capacity of six biodegradable plastics in China has reached 20 million tons/year, and the total production capacity of six major biodegradable plastics in China has reached 20 million tons/year, and it is expected that the total production capacity of more than 5 million tons/year can be released by the end of 2025.

Biodegradable plastics are frequently favorable at the policy level. In 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission and other departments successively issued the “Opinions on Further Strengthening Plastic Pollution Control” and the “Notice on Solidly Promoting Plastic Pollution Control”. In September 2021, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the Notice of the 14th Five-Year Plan for Plastic Pollution Control, proposing to increase the research and transformation of key core technologies of degradable plastics during the 14th Five-Year Plan period and promote the orderly development of the biodegradable plastics industry.

Biodegradable plastics need to be chemically and physically modified according to their performance characteristics to meet the needs of target products and expand their application range. Modified enterprises should not only expand scale, improve production efficiency, and calmly face the release of upstream million tons of raw material capacity, but also continue to develop and update process technology to meet the growing application range and performance needs of the downstream. Biodegradable plastic modification and processing is a key link connecting upstream and downstream, bringing huge market opportunities to related technologies, equipment, and modification additives industries.

In 2021, the construction and downstream application of biodegradable plastic modification plants in China continued to progress. In October 2021, food plastic wrap with PBAT as the main raw material entered the national standard. In November, the national standard of “Biodegradable Plastics and Products Degradation Performance and Labeling Requirements” was released; Hefei Hengxin 30,000 tons/year polylactic acid products project was approved; Hengli Kanghui’s 30,000 tons/year modification project successfully obtained a number of downstream orders. In December, Wanhua Shandong Shouguang signed a biodegradable mulch film demonstration project; Daily plastic products giant Camellia Co., Ltd. announced that it plans to add 35,000 tons/year of degradable plastic products production capacity.
